Vineyards of Brno

The first notes, concerning the vine growing, date from the year 1228, although the vineyards have been located in Brno and its neighbourhood since time out of mind. Tradition of the Brno vineyards influenced a development of the Southern Moravia viticulture. The area is divided into two vine centre. The first centre is characteristic by light sandy soils. "Palava", "Muller-Thurgau", "Tramin" [Traminer], "Muskat moravsky" [Muscat Moravian] - white aromatic varieties, are cultivated here. Gravel, dominating in the second area, allows blue vine varieties - "Frankovka", "Modry Portugal" [Blue Portuguese] to grow there. The local wines are harder. The vineyards of 1,515 acres (2.37 square miles) are cultivated by 511 producers. 39.5 acres of vineyards are located in Brno. In Vinicne Sumice and Obrany you can find the most northern vineyards of the region. The largest part Dolni Kounice has 393 acres of vineyards. "Svatovavrinecke" [St. Lawrence's], "Veltlinske zelene" [Veltlin green], "Muller-Thurgau" and "Frankovka" are grown here, but the blue varieties dominate.
