Vineyards of the Prague area
Vineyards are located in the centre of "Stredoceska kotlina" hollow and represent the smallest vineyard area in the Czech Republic. It extends from Neratovice on the north to Jilove
u Prahy on the south, from Unhost on the west to Uvaly on
the east. Vine has been grown on loess, covering cretaceous sediments. Prague, situated in this region, was the biggest Bohemian city with vineyards. The viticulture represented
the most important field of a production and trade here. Based on a request of the Ministry of Agriculture the Vine Research Station was founded in Karlstejn in 1920. The station, working as a quarantine station as well, tried to prevent from the vine fretter expansion by controlling of the all imported material. Six vine growers cultivate almost 47 acres of vineyards, located in Benatky nad Jizerou [3.2 acres], Karlstejn [18.8 acres], Maslovice [8.9 acres] and Prague [14.3 acres] today.
